I think pretty much every Houstonian has a go-to place for Tex-Mex food.  It can be hard to force yourself to try something new, but Kid #1 and I recently ventured away from our good old standby to try Casa de Bravos Mexican Restaurant in Sugar Land. The Place

Casa de Bravos is located at the corner of Highway 6 and Austin Parkway in Sugar Land, in the same shopping center with Fitness Connection.  There is a small patio area for outdoor dining, and the restaurant features a bar area, as well as a spacious dining room.

The Food

The menu at Casa de Bravos is pretty typical Tex-Mex fare.  Our entire family has a weakness for any combination of cheese, ranch, and french fries, so we decided to try the Tijuana Fries, which included taco meat in addition to the fries, cheese, and ranch dressing.  We ordered them without jalapenos, but as you can see from the photo, the fries came with jalapenos anyway.  We just picked them off, so it was fine.  Our only wish was that the cheese had been ooey gooey queso instead of shredded cheese.

Kid #1 ordered beef tacos.  He wanted them without tomatoes, but inexplicably, they showed with tomatoes and without cheese.  <shrug>  The tortillas appeared (and tasted) homemade — soft and fresh.  The tacos were a bit too spicy for my son’s taste buds, but I must disclose to you that what he considers spicy wouldn’t bother 99% of people.  I thought they were pretty tasty.

I ordered the Burrito Superior, which came with rice, beef, and beans, smothered in queso.  Can you say, “Yum!”?  I knew you could!  It was a huge portion, probably big enough for 2 people to split.

The best part for Kid #1 was the free, self-serve ice cream cones for dessert.  I had one too, and it hit the spot.

Final Thoughts

Our meal at Casa de Bravos was fine.  The staff was very friendly, and the service was generally good.  The couple of mix-ups on our order were unfortunate, but not a big enough deal to ruin the experience.  We prefer our “regular” Tex-Mex restaurant — it’s our version of Cheers, they know us and we don’t even have to tell them our order — but I really have nothing bad to say about Casa de Bravos.  The food was quite tasty and fresh.
